Performing “Domino Effect”
My name is Michelle L Tarshus, I am currently an undergrad in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. I was born in the Philippines but was raised in Elmira, NY (a small town in Upstate NY) and now reside in Syracuse, NY. I have been writing poetry/songs since I was 11 years old, and have been performing spoken word poetry since my freshman year of college. I l.o.v.e. to write and truly appreciate the connections I make with those who listen to the stories I tell through my poetry. I try to provide a voice for those who feel their voice is either gone or going unheard. I participate in motivational speaking every chance I get, in hopes of encouraging my peers to feel confident and empowered in all that they do.
I am the current Vice President and a Co-Founder of Nu Rho Poetic Society which was founded in September 2011, an active member of Verbal Blend since February 2010, and most recently as of September 2012, a new addition to the Underground Poetry Spot movement. I have also started a program at the Syracuse Veteran Affairs Hospital called the Veteran Appreciation Shows (VA Shows).
MiMi is my alternate ego and came out when I was 15 and stuck in my own mind. She provides me an opportunity to see the world in another light and is the other half of Michelle, who makes me whole.
I truly believe that the gift of expression is a powerful thing and that those lucky enough to be blessed with it at any moment have the obligation to insight the world in any way, shape, or form. My gift has been words. I can only hope that they reach people who are listening and call out to those who are not. I also believe that poetry is a tool that can be used to build confidence and empowerment, so I encourage you to write, to share, and most importantly to feel entitled to the insight you are providing.
